At CTL, our mission has always been deeply rooted in supporting K-12 education. We design technology to empower students and educators, but we also recognize that serving the education community means protecting the world those students will inherit.
That is why we are incredibly proud to announce that CTL has officially joined the Environmental Sustainability Committee at CoSN (the Consortium for School Networking), a joint initiative in partnership with SETDA.
Why This Committee Matters to K-12 Districts
As school districts across the country navigate the realities of massive 1:1 device deployments, sustainability has moved from a "nice-to-have" to an absolute necessity. Technology leaders are facing unique modern hurdles—ranging from minimizing device breakage to managing electronic waste and combating the budget strain of short technology lifecycles.
CoSN’s Environmental Sustainability Committee is tackling these challenges head-on. By bringing together passionate EdTech advocates and industry leaders, the committee creates highly practical, actionable resources, such as The CTO’s Guide to Sustainability. These initiatives empower school districts to integrate environmental stewardship directly into their technology planning, procurement, and daily operations.
Aligning with Our B Corp Purpose
Joining this committee is a natural extension of who we are. As a certified B Corporation, CTL is committed to balancing purpose and profit. We don't just measure our success by the number of Chromebooks we ship, but by our positive impact on our workers, communities, and the environment.
Our B Corp status drives us to focus continuously on sustainability—whether that means offering robust device recycling programs, extending the lifespans of our products, or designing more modular, repairable technology for schools. Collaborating with CoSN enables us to bring our sustainability expertise directly to the K-12 space, ensuring school districts have the support they need to build eco-friendly digital learning environments.
Looking Ahead
The committee is actively developing new critical resources to guide school leaders, including sustainable procurement frameworks, case studies of leadership, and best-practice playbooks designed to maximize technology investment ROI while minimizing environmental impact.
"We are excited to participate in this committee and look forward to contributing to the impactful new publications and guidance for sustainability initiatives in K-12 schools," said Mike Mahanay, Vice President and Corporate Sustainability Officer of CTL. "As a B Corp dedicated to K-12 education, helping districts build durable, eco-friendly technology ecosystems is exactly where our passion lies."
CTL looks forward to working alongside CoSN, SETDA, and fellow committee members to shape a cleaner, greener future for EdTech. Stay tuned for updates as these new sustainability tools and guides are released!
