FAQ About Chromebooks with LTE
About LTE-Enabled Chromebook Devices
CTL was one of the first Chromebook manufacturers to create LTE-embedded Chromebooks. Today, CTL offers the newest version, the PX112C Series with integrated 5G, 4G LTE, and CBRS connectivity.
Integrated LTE must be configured at the time of manufacture and offered in one combined device, such as the CTL Chromebook PX112C Series. However, for existing fleets, you would need to employ a hotspot for each Chromebook, creating extra layers of IT management complexity and increasing cybersecurity risk.
Built-in LTE is superior for several reasons: it preserves the Chromebook's battery life better than tethering, it eliminates the risk of students losing an external hotspot device, and it is more cyber secure. Additionally, built-in LTE requires no additional IT configuration or management from your staff.
Absolutely. Connecting via a private cellular network is significantly more secure than using "Free Public Wi-Fi." LTE connections are encrypted by the carrier, reducing the risk of "man-in-the-middle" attacks and ensuring student data stays protected.
About LTE Connectivity on Chromebooks
Yes. As long as there is a cellular signal from your provider, your CTL Chromebook will stay connected. This makes LTE-enabled Chromebooks the ideal solution for "closing the digital divide" for students who may not have reliable high-speed internet at home.
Yes. Just like a smartphone, an LTE-enabled Chromebook requires a service plan. CTL devices are currently certified on the Verizon network, but are also compatible with other major carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile, allowing you to choose the provider that offers the best coverage for your district. If you're setting up your own private wireless network, CTL devices also operate on CBRS Band 48, which is carrier independent.
You can activate it according to your carrier's instructions or you can work with CTL to activate it for you. CTL provides activation and troubleshooting as part of the lifecycle services you receive with your fleet order.
ChromeOS is highly efficient, but cloud-based work does consume data. To help manage this, CTL recommends using Chrome’s "Data Saver" features and educating users on managing offline files in Google Drive to minimize cellular data consumption during large tasks.
