After the Incident - Cyber Readiness for K–12 Districts

The Future of Learning: Chromebooks, Googlebooks, and CTL’s Commitment to You Reading After the Incident - Cyber Readiness for K–12 Districts 3 minutes

Recent K12 cybersecurity incidents are a reminder that K–12 cybersecurity risk does not end when a vendor restores service. Exposed information can fuel highly believable phishing and impersonation attempts long after the initial breach.

That's why we put together this two-part online course:

After the Incident: Cyber Readiness for K–12 Districts

This two-part interactive webinar series is grounded in the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. District teams will learn how to prepare for the phishing aftershock, strengthen vendor and identity management practices, and create a practical 30/60/90-day cyber-readiness plan.

Facilitated by Diane Doersch, former school district CTO and Senior Director of Technology, this series is designed for K–12 technology leaders, cabinet members, communications staff, and district teams responsible for protecting systems, data, and community trust.

Participants will engage in practical discussion, scenario-based learning, and guided planning to help their districts move from awareness to action. Attend both sessions to build a clearer understanding of current cyber risks, identify priority next steps, and leave with tools your district can use immediately.

Part 1 will cover "The Breach Aftershock: Vendor Risk, Relationship Data, and the Phishing Surge." Participants can expect to learn:

  • Current K–12 District Risks: Understand how recent cybersecurity incidents connect to the ongoing, real-world vulnerabilities facing school districts today.

  • Relationship-Aware Phishing: Learn how bad actors use exposed, publicly available information to craft highly sophisticated and believable phishing attacks.

  • Cybersecurity Framework Alignment: Discover how to map these specific digital risks directly to the NIST CSF and the K–12 Cybersecurity Rubric.

  • Priority District Actions: Identify the immediate, high-priority steps your district needs to take right now to secure its infrastructure.

  • Real-World Incident Response: Practice critical, fast-paced decision-making through an interactive, realistic school district crisis scenario.

  • Gaps and Best Practices: Analyze common response patterns, uncover hidden security gaps, and explore promising industry practices during a group debrief.

  • Immediate Next Steps: Translate your workshop takeaways into a tangible readiness checklist and a concrete seven-day action plan.

Part 2 will cover "From Breach Response to Cyber Readiness: Building a 30/60/90-Day Hardening Plan." Participants can expect to learn:

  • Urgent Post-Incident Hardening: Identify the immediate, high-priority areas your district must prioritize to secure and reinforce your infrastructure after a security event.

  • Action Planning Frameworks: Learn how to organize and align your district's action plans around the recognized readiness functions of the NIST CSF and the K–12 Cybersecurity Rubric.

  • Risk Prioritization Techniques: Participate in a practical activity designed to help you isolate and focus on your district's top three highest-impact cyber risks.

  • Actionable Risk Translation: Discover how to effectively translate abstract digital risks into practical, assigned, and fully owned organizational actions.

  • 30/60/90-Day Cyber Readiness Planning: Build a comprehensive, phased roadmap through an interactive action-planning scenario to guide your district's security posture over the next three months.

  • Collaborative Leadership Debrief: Surface common operational needs, identify broader response patterns, and pinpoint the specific leadership supports required for success.

  • Plain-Language Executive Communication: Prepare clear, non-technical talking points and communication strategies to confidently brief your cabinet and school board.
