At Sgt. Dominick Pilla Middle School, that vision is a reality. Through an inspiring evolution, a group of students who once simply helped troubleshoot classroom tablets has transformed into a fully functioning Student Tech Team (STT). Even more exciting, Pilla Middle School is making history as the first school currently piloting the groundbreaking new CTL Student Chromebook Repair Program.

Here is how this innovative curriculum is turning students from passive tech users into certified specialists, leaders, and community builders.

Redefining Hands-On STEM

The traditional view of student tech squads usually involves basic troubleshooting—restarting a device or connecting it to Wi-Fi. The CTL program completely shatters that mold.

By embedding the CTL certification process into the school day, students are treated as true professionals. This comprehensive curriculum provides students with rigorous, hands-on experience in real-world hardware repair. Instead of waiting weeks for a manufacturer to ship back a device, student tech team members are under the hood doing the work themselves.

Through the CTL curriculum, students learn how to:

  • Perform repairs, from replacing broken display screens to fixing individual keys.

Recently, members of the Pilla Student Tech Team took the stage at staff meetings to present and troubleshoot directly with faculty. While presenting to teachers can be intimidating for any middle school student, their deep knowledge of the CTL concepts allowed them to step up as true experts.

This flip in the traditional classroom dynamic has done wonders for the school culture. It strengthens student-teacher relationships, builds public speaking skills, and ensures that staff development is aligned with student voices.

Driving the Future of Student Agency

As Grace, a Pilla Student Tech Team member, beautifully puts it: Being a tech team member at Pilla is really cool because I've always been good at tech but I never could put it to use and help people. It's nice how I can be there for students and staff that need me. It gives me the chance to stand out.”
