CTL Statement on the Dangerous and Illegal "Chromebook Challenge" on TikTok and Other Internet Platforms
Beaverton, OR – May 15, 2025 – CTL has become aware of a disturbing and dangerous trend circulating on the social media platforms including TikTok, referred to as the "Chromebook Challenge." This challenge encourages students to intentionally damage their school-issued Chromebooks, often by inserting metal objects like paper clips or pencil lead into the USB ports. The goal is to cause the lithium-ion battery to short-circuit, leading to smoke, sparks, overheating, and in some cases, toxic gas generation and fires, according to the National Fire Protection Agency.
CTL unequivocally condemns this reckless and harmful activity. Setting fire to any electronic device is not only incredibly dangerous, posing a significant risk of serious injury, property damage, and even death, but it is also illegal. Arson and the intentional destruction of property are serious crimes that can carry legal consequences.
Any damage to a CTL Chromebook resulting from intentional acts such as setting it on fire or any other form of deliberate destruction will void any extended warranties provided by CTL for repair or replacement. Our warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. Our accidental damage policies cover accidental damage from drops or other unintended mishaps. Intentional damage falls far outside the scope of these protections and is not covered under CTL policies.
We urge parents, guardians, educators, and students to understand the severe risks and legal ramifications associated with participating in this dangerous "challenge." We implore everyone to refrain from engaging in any activity that could lead to harm or the destruction of property. To help schools communicate the dangers of this “challenge,” we are offering:
- A customizable form letter to inform parents of this trend and provide school policy information
- The New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services guide for schools on how to deal with an emergency situation.
CTL is committed to providing safe and reliable educational technology. We are working to raise awareness about the dangers of this trend and encourage students to stay within the bounds of responsible digital citizenship. We believe in the power of technology to enhance learning, and endorse the safety of our Chromebooks when used as directed.
We encourage anyone with information about these activities to report them to the appropriate school and local civil authorities. Safety and responsible behavior are paramount for the health, safety, and learning of our nation’s students.
Sincerely,
Jason Mendenhall, CEO, CTL Corporation and the CTL Team
